PHASE 4 – INDEPENDENT
INDEPENDENT LIVING
Reaching Phase 4 is our goal for all our residents that enter our programme. It is always a joy to see residents obtain a home of their own. We desire all of the ex-offenders to have developed responsibility and a healthy lifestyle so that they can contribute to society for the rest of their lives.
The volunteer mentors play a large part in supporting the ex-offenders during this phase. The men have the choice whether to participate in this programme, but it is strongly encouraged. Having a mentor invest in the ex-offender will keep a level of accountability in his life, reducing the chance of reoffending.
As more residents move through Phase 3, more Phase 4 accommodation is needed. Phase 4 accommodation is obtained through a social landlord (RSL) or private landlord.
Social Landlord (RSL)
Most accommodation through RSLs are based on nomination rights.
Stepping Stones Trust currently offers residents help with:
· Getting on the housing waiting list
· Filling out the housing application form to ensure it is done to the highest potential
· Considering them for housing nomination under our rights
Private Landlords
There is a considerable amount of accommodation available, but landlords generally want a deposit of about 6 weeks rent, plus the first month’s rent in advance. This can amount to £2,000 for an Inner London flat, although cheaper accommodation is available.
This amount would represent a considerable challenge to our residents since, though they are encouraged to save towards this, they are unlikely to save more than £200 in their first six months if they remain on benefits, more if they have found employment.
Stepping Stones Trust is able to offer an advance towards the deposit if certain criteria are met, helping the resident obtain their goal of living independently.
Moving In
We all know that moving can be a busy and stressful time in someone’s life. There are many things to organise and many decisions to make. Imagine not being familiar with all the many details a person has to face in the moving process. Our clients often feel overwhelmed as they face many decisions when they move into their first independent flat since being in prison.
Stepping Stones Trust offers to come alongside men and offer support in obtaining furniture, setting up essential utilities and the physical moving process. The less stress that is attached to the moving process as they live independently the better!
